Chapter 14 - Testing The Waters

As Akira’s shift steadily came to an end, she helped Kobayashi clean things up in the preparation room, as had become routine for her to do before she’d leave for the night. Her shift wasn’t particularly busy, nor stressful, outside of being pulled into Komatsu’s office that is, and so she felt somewhat relaxed by the end of it. After the hectic Saturday night she experienced, this rather mundane Sunday was a welcome change of pace. She was reminded by Kobayashi before she left, however, that this Wednesday was New Year’s Eve, and so she should expect it to be even busier than Saturday. Though, Komatsu provided some extra incentives to work that day, so people were less likely to call out.

Once the preparation room was cleaned up, Akira parted ways with Kobayashi as he moved to help clean up other areas of the kitchen. She made her way up front, clocked out at the bar area, waved goodbye to Miki, and Fujii, then left out the front doors. No sooner than she was outside, did Akira light up a cigarette and take a long, steady drag off it. While smoking, she sent her girlfriend a text message, seeing if she wanted her to come over, since they both had to work tomorrow. Though, as she was walking away from the building, she heard someone call out to her.

“Quite the interesting form of entertainment you’ve found for yourself, Makai,” a man called out in a strong foreign accent.

Stopping, Akira turned and looked towards a black sedan that was parked in the restaurant’s parking lot, near the street. Standing next to the vehicle was an all too familiar face, Police Lieutenant Yakovna Isaac, Ikumi’s uncle, and the man who’d practically made it his mission in life to keep notes on her every action following the murders that occurred back in April. Despite many officers within the police department believing that Takashi had, in fact, acted alone in the killings, Yakovna was the only one who appeared to see through those lies.

Gritting her teeth, Akira put her phone away so she’d have a free hand to rudely gesture towards Yakovna with her middle finger. “Fuck you, asshole. I know what you said to my boss earlier. You’re such a fucking prick.”

Yakovna briefly laughed before shaking his head. “You act as if my actions were out of malice. All I was doing was my part in assuring the safety of the fine men and women who work at this establishment. After all, wouldn’t you want to know if a dangerous criminal was working alongside you?”

Growling under her breath, Akira again rudely gestured towards him, this time with both hands, one still holding her cigarette. “Fuck you. Let me guess, you interrogated Ikumi to figure out I worked here, huh?”

He scoffed. “Quite the contrary. I simply overheard a discussion between her and her father. Though, if you truly don’t wish for others to know your business, perhaps you shouldn’t share such information,” he suggested before cupping his chin curiously.
